The distinctive character of Targhee-Columbia wool shines in Shelter, Brooklyn Tweed's versatile medium-weight yarn. Designed to be a workhorse yarn, Shelter is absolutely beautiful for cables, ribbing, textured stitch motifs, open work, plain stockinette and garter stitch. Ideal for sweaters of every variety, winter accessories, and blankets.
Shelter is woollen spun, so is amazingly light & airy. The two plies are gently twisted to preserve that buoyant quality (so Shelter is a little more delicate than most commercial yarns). Woollen-spun yarns are more adaptable in gauge, so can compress to a dense 5ply / sport weight or bloom when worked on large needles.
Shelter has a faintly rustic nature, so there may be slightly thinner or thicker sections and you’ll find the occasional fleck of vegetable matter that shows the wool is never treated with harsh chemicals!
- 10 ply / worsted weight
- 100% Targhee-Columbia wool

Projects made with Shelter achieve their full beauty after wet blocking, as stitches relax and bonds with their neighbours to produce an even, light, plush fabric with a halo. You shouldn’t notice any change in gauge.
So light and warm!
By: Suzanne Harrison on 20 January 2022I just finished the Cascades Sweater in BT Shelter, Sap colourway. Firstly, kudos to Skein Sisters - the colours on their website are more true to life than on the BT website. If you're used to lovely soft yarn Shelter can be a bit of a shock, but I was after a more rustic look and feel so didn't mind the roughish texture while knitting. The resulting sweater is stunning, although I will warn that it dropped about 2 1/2 inches with blocking - it didn't stretch around the body at all (the measurement around the bust is spot on) but the sleeves and the body are considerably longer than before I blocked it. I'll remember that for next time! It may just be me and my knitting/tension, but I've not experienced that with any other yarn. Have already ordered Shelter for another jumper and have a few more garments planned for this yarn besides. The absolute best features of this yarn are it's gorgeous rustic finish, it's warmth and light weight. Highly recommend it.
