Decorate, darn, patch and mend holes or worn areas in any type of clothing fabric, including your precious handknits, using our by Skein Sisters Darning Loom Set. Play with weaving colour combinations and designs with multiple colours of yarn used together.
Each Darning Loom Set includes a metal loom assembly with hooks and a timber disc, connected by rubber bands, plus a steel latch hook and tapestry needle.
Use your creativity to weave fun and colourful patches onto fabrics. Leave the top of your patch open to create a mini pocket, add fringes, and play with different decorative shapes.
Darn on the right side. To use your loom:
- Mark the outline of your patch if desired with a fabric pencil or basting.
- Stretch and smooth your fabric over the timber disc, using a rubber band to secure the fabric in place into the groove.
- Secure the hook assembly to the disc using another rubber band, adjusting your fabric so that the top edge of your patch is at the bottom of the hooks. Position the hooks so that they're facing upright.
- Set up your warps using a needle to attach strands of yarn between the hooks and the opposite edge of your patch, working stitches along the opposite edge to attach the warps to your fabric. Use as many hooks as you need to cover your patch area.
- Flick the hooks to one side.
- Weave weft rows using the tapestry needle to run the yarn between the upper and lower warps (it's easiest close to the hooks with the eye of the needle first), securing the yarn to your fabric with a small stitch at the start of each row, and working backwards and forwards. As you work each row, use your needle to press the yarn down, closing the weave.
- Flick the hooks to the opposite side to reverse the positioning of the warps. You're now ready for the next row.
- Repeat until you have worked as close to the hooks as possible on the last row.
- To finish off the final row, remove the loops from the hooks and weave your yarn through again, fastening each loop to your fabric with a small stitch as you go. Alternatively, you can leave the top of the patch open to make a small pocket.
To make edge fringes:
- Instead of looping the yarn directly back on itself at the edges of the patch, leave a double length fringe loop at the bottom of the patch when setting up your warps and a single length loop at each end when weaving your weft rows.
- Secure each end of these loops to the fabric with a small stitch before weaving into the patch.
- Once the hooks are removed, pull half of the bottom loops through to the top then secure your last row as above. Cut your fringes to the desired length.
You can make your patch as long as you like by leaving warp loops along the bottom. Once you've worked up to the hooks, reposition your fabric on the disc and pull the warps up through the patch to carry on weaving.
