The Mara Shawl is one of our favourite patterns for beginner shawl knitters who know how to knit and purl but want to explore further techniques, and it's also fantastic for more experienced knitters who want a quick relaxing knit. Incorporating simple increases and decreases for shaping, plus garter stitch and ribbing for different textures, the shawl is cast on with 5 stitches and it grows from there into a simple garter-stitch triangle shape, worked from the top down and trimmed with a pleated border.
This flexible pattern can be worked larger for a full-sized shawl or smaller for a petite shawlette. Knit in 8ply / DK weight yarn, this soft, squishy shawl is the perfect companion on a cool spring evening or layered under a winter coat for fall. The pattern was designed for Tosh DK so we've put together these kits for this beautiful shawl.
Gauge: 16 sts to 10cm in stockinette stitch.

You will also need (not included):
- 4.5-5mm 80 cm long circular needle
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
Our sample is shown in Rocinante. Our sample maker Natalia said, "I thought this was a great shawl project for a beginner - it had a very simple construction and was almost entirely garter stitch so very little purling! I met gauge and was able to use 3 skeins of the Mad Tosh DK with almost nothing leftover - love that! I would almost call it more of a recipe than a pattern as the instructions aren't precise - which makes sense because a) it's free and b) it caters for different yarn weights.
Overall a quick and easy knit that was a lot of fun! I'd recommend for beginners to use lifelines especially because of the yarn over increases."
About Madelinetosh Tosh DK
Madelinetosh Tosh DK is made up of 4 twisted strands (plys) of 100% superwash merino wool. This versatile, plump,woolly yarn knits and crochets into luxurious fabrics with wonderful stitch definition, perfect for gorgeous, squishy scarves, shawls and garments. Each incredibly soft skein is hand-dyed in small dye lots and there is a beautiful range of colours to choose from!
- 8ply / DK / light worsted weight yarn
- 100% superwash merino wool
- 205m / 225yd per 100g skein
- Gauge knit: 20-22sts per 10cm on 4mm-4.5mm needles
- Gauge crochet: 12-17sts per 10 cm with a 4.5mm-5.5mm hook
- Care: Machine wash cold on gentle cycle, air dry flat
Dyed by hand in Texas from wool ethically sourced in South Africa.
Please note: Dyed by hand in small batches, Madelinetosh yarns do not come in dye lots. The beauty of hand-dyed yarns is that each hank is a unique work of art, so please be aware that there can be a variation in colouring, hue and saturation, even within the same dye batch. We suggest using two skeins and alternating rows to ensure there is no obvious line when you change skeins.
