Nectar Blanket by Ysolda is a pretty, modular blanket made up of knitted lace hexagons; perfect as an on-the-go or group project! Designed for intermediate knitters, this blanket will delight you with its delicate lace pattern reminiscent of beeswax, and soft, squishy textured border. We've put together this selection of yarn sets in Fiddlesticks Peppin 4, a 4ply / fingering weight 100% Australian fine merino superwash wool. Soft and bouncy with a lovely twist, it's a smooth woollen yarn with a great texture. Each colourway has two colour options, with the main colour listed in the colour name.
After taking a beekeeping course, designer Ysolda Teague was inspired by the way bees work together to produce honey and maintain the health of the colony. She says: “Why not learn from the bees and team up with some friends to each make a hexagon that celebrates the bonds between you? A hive of activity can come together to make this blanket as a group project ideal as a gift for a little one or for snuggling up on the sofa with your own handiwork.”
The hexagons are knit in the round from the centre out and the lace pattern is simple, with the pattern including both written and charted instructions. The pattern also includes directions for all of the triangles and half hexagons, which are knitted flat, needed to fill in the gaps and create a rectangular shape. After joining the pieces a garter stitch border is picked up and worked in the round to complete the blanket. Each hexagon works up quickly and is suitable for advanced beginner to intermediate knitters, and beyond.
Techniques used in the pattern include:
- Stocking stitch
- Garter stitch
- Lace knitting
- Seaming
- Casting on, binding off, and finishing
This versatile pattern can be knitted in a range of yarn weights from fingering to worsted, and you can make the blanket any size you want by knitting more hexagons. Our yarn sets are put together using 100% wool, 4ply / fingering Fiddlesticks Peppin 4, and each one includes enough yarn to make a 14 hexagon baby blanket plus the border. Each colourway has two colour options of main colour/edging for you to choose from, with the main colour listed in the colour name. Your finished blanket will be incredibly soft and look amazing.
Our yarn sets contain all the yarn you need to make the blanket and include:
- 10 balls of the main colour (listed in the colour name and shown on the left in each image)
- 1 ball of the edging colour (shown on the right in each image)
Plus you'll save 5% off the full price of the yarn.
Note: the pattern is NOT included in the set but may be purchased and downloaded from Ravelry.
Tools required (not included):
- 3.25mm knitting needles. We recommended using a long circular needle (80cm and above) for this project
- Stitch markers

- Tapestry needle for sewing in ends
Finished dimensions: approximately 76cm x 77cm after blocking. Easily adjust the size by knitting more hexagons.
