Pengweeno/Penguono! with Lia
Grab your needles and come along to the fun class & discover all about how to knit this wonderful project. The class covers techniques for both adult Penguono and child Pengweeno. Intermediate knitters & up
Pengweeno/Penguono, by the inimitable Stephen West, is such a fun knitting pattern! This fabulous cardigan has a unique look and is a great stash buster. The original Penguono is an adult sized cardigan, and it was so popular that Stephen West also released a child's version, the Pengweeno for newborn - 12 years old. This class will have you ready to embark on either version of this great pattern!
The possibilities for this pattern are endless – so endless in fact, that starting out can feel quite daunting! Not to mention the unusual construction and varied techniques involved in the project. And… if you’re anything like us, scrolling through the over 2500 Penguonos and 1000 Pengweenos on Ravelry only makes it harder, not easier!
In this fun and hands-on class, we will consider gauge and sizing and discuss how to choose your yarn. We’ll review the modular construction method of the pattern and we’ll also make a Pengweeno/Penguono sampler to practice the various techniques of the pattern, including picking up stitches, welts and applied i-cord edging.
By the end of the class, you’ll be feeling confident and ready to get started on this unique pattern and let your creativity come to life!

Your teacher: Lia Weitzel
Lia (she/her) lives on Wan land in Sydney’s Inner West. She started knitting in earnest at 18 years old, after her mum received a terminal cancer diagnosis. Lia’s mum spent many hours in the chemo chair teaching her all kinds of stitches and techniques.
Lia has continued the family tradition of crafting and 15 years (and ~30 kilometres of yarn) later, her favourite clothing items to knit are jumpers and cardigans. She gravitates most towards textured knitting – think cables, lace, baubles and ganseys.
Lia has spent several years working in local yarn stores in Sydney (Australia) and Rotterdam (The Netherlands). She is excited to share the joy of knitting with you and to help you expand your knitting skill set!
