Perfect for a quick, soft, chunky cowl or a cosy warm jumper for the coldest of days, Donegal Chunky Merino Tweed is an authentic Donegal tweed made from Australian merino wool and milled in Kilcar, Donegal, Ireland.
Flecks of colour are dotted throughout the yarn giving beautiful depth to your finished projects. It has a soft feel and would be a beautiful substitute for Brooklyn Tweed Quarry or even Alafoss Lopi patterns. Make jumpers and cardigans, vest, scarves, cowls and beanies... it would be the perfect yarn for Kate Davies' iconic Carbeth Cardigan!
If you've used Darnie or Dooish from Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales, you'll find Donegal Chunky much softer (as it's merino wool) and lovely for next to the skin wear.

What does 'In the Oil' mean? This yarn is 'in the oil' meaning the final milling process of scouring the spun yarn was bypassed. This process uses an immense amount of water to make the yarn look polished, so leaving it in the oil means that all the water is saved, especially as we repeat the process when you block your finished project. On blocking the yarn blooms, softens and takes on the loveliest appearance. If you don't like the feel you are free to wash the skeins prior to use. Carefully untwist the skein, keeping it in the 'loop' and leave it to soak in some water with added wool wash. Rinse it with fresh water then hang to dry completely. Wind into a skein before using.
In the oil is also more suitable for machine knitters and handweavers helping lubricate as you work.
Produced in Ireland by Studio Donegal.
