Jasper - (n) Of Persian Origin 'The Keeper of Treasure'
Spiritually: Supreme Nurturer - it sustains you through times of stress and absorbs negative energy.
Jasper is the name given to Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales' new 100% Yak yarn.. sometimes the most unassuming item or living thing can be “the keeper of treasure”. This big bulky bovine of the Himalayas is the keeper of an amazingly soft down that is the foundation of a very special yarn that will sustain you through times of stress and absorb any negativity. Soft as cashmere, warmer than merino wool, the baby yak fibre is a smooth undercoat which protects the animals during the coldest times.
Jo (Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales) was dreaming of a versatile lace weight that could adapt to many uses, techniques and seasons and pure yak was the perfect choice. As a lover of fair isle and stranded colour work it was important to have an ever evolving and extensive colour range.
A treasury of a thousand colours was in her mind and who else but the living treasure herself Katrina of Pirate Purl Yarns to help her bring it to life! There are also eight undyed natural shades, according to the down colour.
A single strand of Jasper Yak knits as a lace weight 3ply, 2 strands held together is a sport to DK weight...or hold it with the matching hand-dyed Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales Mimosa 100% brushed silk to produce a sport weight yarn with a shimmering halo! The yarn is soft to the touch and beautiful to work with, particularly as an alternative to fine Shetland yarns for Fair Isle knitting and stranded colourwork. The stitches 'stick' in place and form a lovely soft colourwork fabric. It's also wonderful for lace and textured knitting and crochet, with good stitch definition and drape.
