Wild Brier is a beautifully light & soft slubby yarn, with a matt, organic homespun look.
Jo of Spinning Yarns Weaving Tales in Victoria had an idea in her mind for a new yarn that was totally hers: natural fibres, slightly textured, a little like homespun and so so soft. After reading ‘Brambly Hedge’ to her granddaughter, the name Wild Brier came alive and the colours were clear. The yarn could be dyed in all manner of colours to match the seasons; colours that would be earthy and grounded but light and gentle. Colours that were timeless and ageless but reminiscent at the same time.
So a beautiful base yarn was sourced from a mill in Italy. Made from Australian wool blended with mulberry noil silk, Wild Brier is the result.
Jo also had the idea of collaborating with other dyers to share her dream. Rachael from Drover & Classer was given a brief on 10 colours while Jo worked on other colours. Dyeing in small batches gives individuality to each batch … no batch is ever quite the same as the last.
This lusciously soft and light yarn knits to an 8ply / DK weight gauge but has an amazing 350m per skein! You'll only need half the number of balls to knit a jumper!
It looks wonderful as a single coloured shawl or garment, and is fabulous in fair isle and colourwork.
