Boneyard Shawl by Stephen West was the first Westknits design ever! Published in 2009, it was named after the Boneyard Arts Festival in Urbana, Illinois. This pattern was the shawl that started the phenomenon that is Westknits! If you're not familiar with Stephen West, take a look at his other designs on Ravelry here.
This simple triangular shawl begins at the top centre starting with a garter tab and then increases toward the border. You can knit the shawl with any yarn weight and continue the shape to make it as large as you wish. Three 100g skeins of yarn is enough to knit the DK weight version or two 100g skeins of 4ply yarn will make a lighter fingering weight version as described in the pattern.
Access Stephen's Free Boneyard Shawl YouTube tutorial here. He'll show you how to cast on, knit the M1L/M1R increases, and how to bind off.
Techniques used in the pattern include:
- Garter tab cast on
- M1L/M1R and yarn over increases
- Stretchy bind off through the back loop
- Blocking and finishing
Once you knit the Boneyard Shawl, you can experiment with stripes and textures as you venture into the wonderful woolly world of knitted shawls. More experienced shawl knitters will also enjoy the simplicity of this shawl pattern.
Our kits contain 2 skeins of Fiori Sock, enough to make the light, airy fingering version of the shawl or 3 skeins of Fiori DK IV for a squisher, snugglier version. If you'd like to put together your own kit, we have a wonderful selection of 4ply/fingering/sock and DK weight yarns. The pattern is best made in tonal or less variegated yarns.
Note: the pattern is not included but a free download can be found here on Ravelry.
Tools required (not included):
- 3.5mm (Fiori Sock version) or 4.5mm (Fiori DK IV version) 80-100cm circular knitting needles

Finished dimensions (taken after blocking): 178cm wingspan length, 76cm from cast-on to bind-off edge measured along the centre spine. You can customise the shawl to any size you like by knitting more or less pattern repeats and then starting the border.
